A great nights sleep...

28 Feb 2025

When we have guests staying with us here on the farm, they often comment on how quiet and how dark it is here…it’s a recurring theme in our glamping reviews that our guests are surprised at how well they have slept!

I think I possibly take for granted how lucky I am to have no streetlights or sirens or neighbours or traffic noise to disrupt my sleep.

In a tech-driven, city-living world, research tells us that the hunt for an undisturbed, good night’s sleep has become a big-ticket item for our wellness toolkits, and I think this search should actively include finding a place to sleep where you are immersed in nature.  A place with no artificial light, a place where you can wake and rest with the sun and switch the background noise to birds and owls and trees.

Science indicates that sleeping outdoors (or as close as you dare) exposes you to natural light, which helps regulate your circadian rhythm(!).  Morning sunlight boosts serotonin levels, while evening darkness encourages melatonin production, helping you fall asleep and wake up feeling refreshed.

Sleeping in a space with lots of fresh air promotes better breathing, and therefore better access to oxygen while you sleep, which in tun leads to deeper, more fulfilling sleep.

Spending a day in nature – hiking, making fires, watching the stars, reading or simply hanging out, before settling down for a night in the great outdoors is a DOUBLE whammy – your body is tired, in a healthy way, from fresh air and activity which also contributes to a better night’s sleep.

When I was planning the setup for Little Seed Field, my husband and I discussed how important it was that the cabins facilitated rest.  That, if we were to stay here, we didn’t go home more tired than when we arrived because we were cold or uncomfortable.  So; our beds have proper, comfy luxury mattresses; all our cabins have log stoves, cosy blankets and deep, thick duvets; our cabins are spaced well apart so that even if you have neighbours, you wouldn’t know they were there and there is access to nature, wildlife, ponds, hikes and stargazing right from your doorstep.

I would love you to give it a try and maybe make Little Seed Field a regular staple in your wellness toolkit.  Sleeping in nature doesn’t have to mean hard floors, soggy canvas and worry.  Sleeping in nature, in one of our cabins, can be relaxing and fulfilling and the key to a great night’s sleep!
